I've read a lot of articles about child being taken from their parents because of weight problems. I'm at odds with this one. What do you think?
For an example: http://www.size-acceptance.org/kayla/Do you think the government or health agencies have the right to take away a child who is obese? No, I don't for that reason alone.
I do think that they should have to attend a mandatory diet and fitness program as a family. Many times the caregivers are overweight too. I think it should be in a "fun" setting like the T.V. show "The Biggest Looser" where they teach you all the basics and provide a lot of moral support. Once you learn how to look after yourself better, you gain confidence. They have had whole families loose weight on that show not just individuals and couples. The results were amazing!

if its cause of a medical reason i think no but if the parent is feeding it too much the that is abuse and yes cause their killing the childDo you think the government or health agencies have the right to take away a child who is obese?Yes I do. Overweight No . But obesity is a hudge problem. Like the story above she was 13 and weighed 250 pds. It was proven that it was not medically but what she ate. Her parents are slowly killing her and thats child abuse in my eyes.
I work in a peds office and have not heard of that. We have a lil girl that is 5 and weghs 100 lbs. Mommy and Daddy give her whatever she wants to eat, however, has never been broughten up as a c.p.s issue. I think, in this situation; if you have taught and taught the parents that what they are doing is only harming their children, then yes it should be a concern. It's about time someone steps up for these kids and say 'enough is enough.'Do you think the government or health agencies have the right to take away a child who is obese?I think it is disgusting and sad that some parents do this to their children. Some kids may be made to be chubby or even a bit overweight...but obese? That means it's affecting their health. I guess some parents may just spoil their children, not know how to say know or enough is enough, or don't see the danger in having a hefty kid. But more often than not, the parents are obese as well and are passing their poor eating habits on to the kids.
I DON'T necessarily think the children should be taken away from their parents, but I do think the family doctor should step in and say, "You are harming your child. This is what you can do to improve your child's health and prevent early death from heart attack, stroke, etc." And then give them healthy tips on turning a child's life around to being more healthy. No one should be made to feel like a terrible parent,s because who knows the reason the child is in this shape? But they DEFINITELY should be made aware of how they can be better parents to the child...and they should follow these instructions. It's just sad not to give your child a chance at a healthy life, whether it's by overfeeding and causing obesity or not getting treament for any other medical condition.Do you think the government or health agencies have the right to take away a child who is obese?
well if you read the article that you linked.....the parents were told of the doctors health concerns and did nothing thus were reported, they were given a second chance by a judge that ordered they take her to a gym and attend nutrition classes.......they didnt do that either, in my opinion thats just as bad if not worse than not feeding her at all, there are too many health conditions that are contributed to poor diet. i have a neice who is big.....shes always been big, she was a 10 lb baby and had just stayed big her whole life...shes 15 and 220 lbs (but 5'10") so shes heavy but not morbidly obese. she plays sports and eats healthy and still cant lose weight, in a case like that I think the law has no right to interfere as everything possible is already being done.......but a child where the parents just dont care the child should be removed.....there was a case a few years ago where an 11 year old died at home from a massive heart attack because she weighed 400 lbs.
I think if all has been done to educate the parents and the child is still putting on weight then yes. That to me is child endangerment. The child is more likely to suffer a heart attack, diabetes and many other major health problems due to their weight and it will lead to an early death. Someone has to what out for the child if the parent isn'tDo you think the government or health agencies have the right to take away a child who is obese?
That is a hard one. Having a child that is extremely obese is very unhealthy for the child and may cause long term health effects. However if the government begins to take these children away, what is next? Put a child in foster care because they are 20 lbs over weight? Take a child away because their parents are overweight and it might influence the child? Where are we going to put all these children? There are so many children in the foster care system now because of sexual abuse or violence. Things that, in my opinion, are far worse then obesity. Foster care also can cause emotional scars and sometimes these foster parents are worse then the biological parents. I would rather someone raise their fat child, then have a child in foster care with emotional problems. Fat can be lost, health problems can be address but emotional problems are far harder to fix.
I think a 13 year old child who is obese SHOULD be tooken aay if she is 250 pounds.
But I do not belive a 13 year old who ways 140 pounds should be tooken away.
I belive that the government should atleast give them a chance to loose weight though.
**** yeah they do, start feeding that little chunky kid right and put him on a tredmill you idiots. who care if hes crying. get him back to normal weight before u destroy that poor frail body!!! how do you even get the money to feed that child???
I didn't read the link, but here's my opinion...
If the parents are continuously feeding their children junk food and allowing them to eat all they want, that is a form of child abuse. I remember years ago when watching one of those wonderful talk shows, the issue discussed was obese children. Seeing a 2 year old that was heavier than my two kids put together was so very wrong. The parent admitted to wanting the child to have whatever they wanted, whatever they asked for. Bottles of strawberry milk, potato chips galore... That is not parenting. That child will die of a heart attack or have such horrible health issues, and the parents just don't have a clue.
So, in that case... yes, the child should be put into the care of someone else, because then that child would actually have a chance at life.
